PRACTICE

We get better at everything through practice - better at foul shots, better at the piano, especially better at speaking in public. The Shakespeare Out Loud series is the perfect tool to practice oral communication.

To begin with, I suggest teachers choose a play from the series that suits the cast of characters in their classrooms. Try to cast your students in parts they will enjoy reading aloud. Cast, schedule and grade daily readings of the play over a well considered period of time, making sure everyone is involved. Reward students who practice and prepare with higher marks - no tests, no essays - all interpretation through the voice; all grades gained through practicing the voice.

Through practice, students will learn and retain new vocabulary and new ways of putting it together. Through practicing Shakespeare they will also discover new ways of thinking.

Students have to practice something to improve their oral communication skills! What better than practicing the best of Shakespeare, out loud?
